From the beginning of the war in Vietnam to this very day the M16 assault rifle has been the main assault weapon for the U.S.A.. Although the gun has changed over time it is still part of the same family that was born of the Vietnam era. First made by colt in the 1960's the M16 was 99cm from butt to tip, fired a 5.56 mm round and had a rate of fired of 750. There has also been many more modern and modified versions that colt has produced. some of the new weapons to come out of the M16 family are the M4A1 short for (Model 4 Advanced 1) which had a folding stock and removable handle and the M4 commando which is the same as the M4 but has a shorter barrel. The CAR 15 which is the smallest of the M16 family the M16A4 and the XM 177.
